This is very important Nadine, and I'm glad you put in out there for everyone to think about. I think the issue goes a little deeper than this, because oftentimes, activism is taken up as an "substitute identity" filling the vacuum of an underlying existential search in a certain individual, particularly the younger.

Instead of doing the hard work of digging through their brains and hearts to see truth in life, often individuals allow other influential personalities and ideologies to do it for them. This unfortunately has tainted the activist community and made it seem to be double faced, take for instance the "human rights activist" who treats his friends like shit.

This in turn de-legitimizes the entire cause and conceals the important and very human drive behind it.

I find that often, the stakes are high for those who publicly claim the higher moral ground, but so is the responsibility they must take. It's not enough than a feminist wants to protect the rights of women, she/he must infuse her entire life and her/his every action with the underlying belief in love, freedom and human dignity in order to truly move those around her/him. This frees the activist from having to watch their egos from any kind of hypocritical act because they become a living, breathing example of universal values that everyone can understand and intuit.
