You can read the full post in Arabic about the Lebanese Parliament vote to cancel Article 562 of the Penal Code that offers reduced sentences for “honor” crimes. The Committee for Administration and Justice, headed by MP Robert Ghanem, had raised the recommendation to cancel Article 562 back on May 16, 2011. The matter was

Al Jazeera Stream hosted a debate on the proposed Law to Protect Women from Family Violence last night. I was arguing for and Sounay Nouh of the Women’s Committee to Protect the Family was arguing against. Discussion focused on marital rape, culture, child protection, and the current legal protection mechanisms.

From 1978, to 2011, the objectification of women in advertising continues. The 1978 ad is a prime example of how [naked] women are adding haphazardly in ads to sell products that have little to do with women or nudity. Patriarchy endorses the use of women’s bodies as objects to sell just about anything. In the

The women’s committee of Dar Al Fatwa in the North of Lebanon have created this flyer bashing CEDAW and claiming that it is an attack on family values and on the psychological and physical particularities of women’s femininity. If anything, they should be sued for horrible graphic design. Why do they have a suburban American-looking

Pay close attention to gender stereotyping around you. To unlearn sexism, you have to notice it first.

Hmmm.. I think they only meant to go vintage (Bic being a pretty “vintage” brand, really not modern) in their ad. And that’s really how ads were back in the pin-up years in the early nineties… So if you think about it this way, I think it’s kinda cute. But I definitely understand your point of view. I would have considered it ‘sexist’ if the overall style was modern.

As a man, I love this ad. I bring a little joy to my daily commute seeing this ad.

It seems to me that the advert in question is considerably less revealing and provocative than many modern ads of its kind. I agree that it is old-fashioned, but that’s a style choice made by the designer… in a year when Wonderbra are making 3D billboards, I’ll take old-fashioned any day.

This is insanity. I can’t believe we still see such things being published in this day n age. 21st century? Doesn’t seem like it …
Very insulting indeed … As a feminist, it kills me that I still have to even bother reiterate how demeaning those are to women … We deserve better.
